Have you ever seen a honeybee up close? I admit, that there have been many bee experiences and none of them have been all that favorable. As kids we ran away screaming. A bee! A bee! Run! Like WWII commandos we would retreat to the bunker and keep a close eye out. There was the yellow jacket. The bumble bee (we called them blackjacks) And the dreaded wasp.
We all knew that a few of these nefarious demons would not be limited to one sting, but would bite, over and over. As an adult I’ve taken a little less cautious approach, and will try to take every opportunity to observe and note what type of bee is buzzing around our yard. I will say that mason bees are not my favorite. I need to make a little bee sign that my ear and nose holes are occupied. Yes, usually by my finger. On the other hand my absolute favorite bee is the honey bee. I must say that I am a rogue beekeeper (http://www.organichive.com) and have lots and lots to say about beekeeping and what is happening with regards to the recent demise of our nations bees. Stay tuned, I promise this is going to be very, very interesting. I will do my best to diligently write every day. (yeah right)
Bees are flying insects closely related to ants and wasps. There are slightly fewer than 20,000 species of bee. There are still many unidentified and the number is probably much higher. Bees can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They are found in every habitat that has flowering plants.
